One doesn’t have to be a translator to reap financial benefits from being multilingual. It has to do negotiating. And as usual, the more you know, the better you do.

Translation is creative https://uctranslations.com/translation-is-creative/ Tue, 15 Oct 2019 16:37:31 +0000 http://uctranslations.com/?p=219 Translation is an act of creativity

In this sharp article on Quartz, the writer points out there have been 29 different translations of Jane Eyre in Iran since 1980. Everyone is different. All are accurate. They simply used different words in Farsi to convey the same ideas, as understood by the translator. Each translator had to be creative, moving an idea—not simply a word—from one language to the other.

Unless a translator understands the radical power of the book in English, there is no real way to convey that in another language so that it reads naturally. Oh, footnotes might help, but one cannot simply read it in Farsi and glean the same insights as an English reader simply by following her story. This takes creativity. A translator who is creative. This is the main reason machine translations simply don’t cut it.

The book is taught around the world, and has been translated nearly 600 times into at least 57 languages. Read it here, by Matthew Reynolds.

“our youngest generation might be a considerable household influencer.” Not only does this mean that those who control the purse strings might not be the whole picture, but that when going across cultures, one must consider argot and slang, and that is very tricky. It might require in-country linguists, ones with access to what is fashionable right now. This could prove to be especially tricky on Snapchat with its visual vocabulary.  See the Survey Monitor here from Quirks.

yes, google translate is a useful tool, and even the only thing we have when dealing with a flood of information, but all the translations it uses are based on human translations, and language is always changing and open to interpretation, nuances. So, while you can use it to get the gist of an idea. And yes, if you’re Wikipedia that is awash in so many words no humans can keep up, google translate is the only way to keep afloat.  Never forget it started with Humans and still relies on us: Wikipedia’s Google translate problem.

Online surveys are different, of course from other methodologies. And this becomes a bit more complex when moving across languages. Even if it’s simply that the “items below” that are to be rated actually appear next to the questions, which cannot be seen by the translator on a piece of paper. Many of these kinds of problems can be solved quickly by having someone who speaks the target language look over the uploaded and ready to roll instrument.
But before one takes care of these finishing touches, one needs to plan well. And Survey magazine provides advice for effective online surveys, which will help when one moves to translation.

New car psychology

Buying a new car is a major event in the lives of most consumers no matter where they live, and this must be taken into consideration when designing a survey instrument. Different cultures have different psychological and emotional reactions. This difference must be acknowledged and taken account for when translating. A real world example is a translation for Brazil on how independent truckers changed their oil. In the US, it’s common to ask if a person “changes your own oil”. In Brazil, that phrase is very vulgar slang that would have elicited laughter if not outright disgust, and would not have helped gather data.
